When's the Best Time of Year to Travel to Maui?

Hawaii Chee Tips

Maui locals are often asked, “when is the best time to travel to Maui?” Any time on Maui is a good time, but there are some definite pros and cons to particular times of year.

During busy season the crowds on the beaches and the extravagantly priced hotels and rentals can put a damper on your Hawaiian vacation.

If you are booking your next Maui vacation and don’t know when to go, here are our top four recommendations.

It may seem like a random month, but that’s exactly what makes it so ideal. Fall means the kids are in school, so there are very little crowds and cheaper travel accommodations. It also ranks higher than other months because it’s often great weather in October. The hot summer season has cooled off, but it’s not quite winter when the tropical storms drop in.

September is another great option, as kids are starting school and people are generally busy from taking multiple days off throughout the summer for weddings and other seasonal events.

Additionally, it’s an ideal time to learn any water sports such as windsurfing or kiteboarding, because the waves are still small on the North Shore as they typically are in the summer months on Maui.

However, the honeymoon crowd will still be fairly active during this time, and the weather may still be a bit hot and humid for someone who lives on the mainland.

If you’ve never seen a whale breach right offshore or slap their tails in the waves then you need to visit Maui in February. You will see at least several whales from your lanai or hotel every day, especially if you are staying in South Maui.

It’s also nice to escape the freezing temperatures of the mainland in the middle of winter!

First Two Weeks of December

Although December is known as a busy month, the first two weeks are actually very slow. Since its in between the holidays, not many people are traveling.

Additionally, it’s a fun time to visit the North Shore to watch some of the best surfers, kiteboarders, and windsurfers in some massive waves.

If you don’t have the flexibility to choose a particular month to travel to Maui, don’t worry too much. You’ll still have a great time in the sun and surf!

Plan and book activities and accommodations ahead of time so you don’t have to stress about anything being booked out.
